"*信じたら崩れそう*", a sir nighteye-centric *boku no hero academia* fanfic.
[[click here for warnings and fic notes]].
[[click here to begin]].this twine fic:
- is a WIP
- uses the name mirai akatani (赤谷未来) as sir nighteye's civilian name.
- includes some small headcanon created by ``background_character`` in their fic "*And you look into their eyes and find you're looking in your own*". essentially, it posits that mirai is a relative of inko (in my fic's case, her younger brother).
it contains the following:
- **spoilers for the upcoming 4th season of heroaca**
- canon typical violence
- some things that might pass off as somewhat accurate medical science but is mostly handwavey bullshit
- mentions of relationships that, depending on the reader, can be mlm or just familial/deep friendship. your mileage will vary.
if all of this is okay with you, please go ahead and [[start|click here to begin]]!
there are ? endings, plus one very au version with it's own set of endings, for a total of X.The Akatani's are an average japanese family - a silent, if overbearing, mother working in corproate finance, an oftentimes absent, albeit doting, father who works for a nondescript company doing nondescript work day in day out, and two children, ages 3 and 6, latchkey kids who look after themselves most often than not.
Inko, the oldest, can attract objects to herself and she uses her quirk to move toys around, much to the fascination of her younger brother, Mirai, while she's not doing simple housework.(click-append: "fascination")[ (and sometimes the aggravation)]
[[That changes of course|a quirk appears]] just days into the new year, after Mirai turns four.
^^Congrats, you have found an ending. Would you like to [[try again|信じたら崩れそう]]?
or maybe try [[a different story]]?^^"Nee-chan," Mirai looks at Inko with hooded eyes, hands scrunched in the pale blue fabric of his uniform in distress.
Inko stops packing both of their lunches, turning a bit to look down at Mirai. "what's wrong mi-chan?" she hops off the stool, coming closer to [[Mirai's height]].Mirai's warning doesn't make sense until two weeks later, when a loud blonde by the name of Mitsuki Fuzakashi joins her class.
Getting sent to the principal's office for inadvertantly causing a large, albeit not that dangerous, explosion in home economics makes them fast friends thanks to their shared detentions.
They grow up together, shoulder to shoulder, helping each other in love, and life, and childrearing... [[but that's a story for a different time.|Mirai's height]]Mirai says the wrong thing when he asks one day what his father does behind closed doors with some of his coworkers.
It leads to fighting, and yelling and, eventually, Inko and Mirai are separated. He moves away with their mother, who goes back into the workforce. Mirai never sees her though, so why couldn't she just let him stay with dad and nee-chan?
He adapts though. Time passes, and in his last year of junior high, he decides to apply to [[U.A.|highschool]]Some days, Mirai wishes he applied to the heroics course, but his mother would have a cow. The management course though? (click-replace: ",")[ - because even Mirai has dreams to be a hero -]
She can't complain about him going into business, can she?
It's during this time that Mirai decides what he really wants to do - and [[there's only one person he could see himself working for|meeting all might]].Mirai takes a train into Roppongi, chasing a vision, looking for the slight blonde man he's seen turn into the iconic All Might, the growing symbol of peace.
"I am going to be your sidekick," Mirai declares the moment he finds him, panting, finally catching up to
Toshinori Yagi gives him an odd look and tries to deflect, but Mirai [[doesn't give up]].Mirai sits outside the operating room, plasters across his face, brace around his wrist to keep it in place. Gran paces as the two wait for Ms Shuuzenji to tell them the news.
[[It's nervewracking.]](align: "=><==")[*no one ever listens*
Maybe things wouldn't have hit the fan if All Might waited a few more minutes, gave him a bit more time...
*Why can't you fight the fate that I saw, why aren't you willing to try and change it?*
It happened with neechan and with any friends he made over time and now you, All Might.
[[*Maybe it wouldn't have come to this if I tried a little harder?*|brushing against Toshinori's]]][ - WRITE MORE ABOUT starting nighteye agency -]
funnily enough, it's not hard to make his own agency.
the years with toshinori wasn't wasted (- would never be a waste no matter what anyone says - )
mirai does his job, does it well enough to garner a reputation.
but in the back of his mind, day in, day out, he's looking for that [[next symbol|meeting mirio]].watching mirio in his first festival
meeting him at the cultural festival
having him intern in 2nd year
out of every student mirai's seen over the past 6 years, mirio is it - he's the perfect one to makethe ninth|passing the torch.
it's only because nedzu and he had bonded during the latter's time as a student that allows him to suggest mirio as the new [[symbol of peace|passing the torch]]...but all might never shows up to meet him.
or rather, he shows up, spectacuarliy late and while mirai is not at the meeting, nedzu tells him enough.
somehow, all might has found himself a successor with no one's input - not mirai's or gran's or, as sir nighteye finds out after a few superterious texts, tsukauchi either - like a *sensible* person would have done.
mirai [doesn't know who]<h1| until the sports festival. like gran, like everyone else in the world, he's watching the newest crop of u.a. students compete.
it's not hard to figure out who toshinori gave it to as mirai watched as the small green haired boy breaks himself to prove a point. but hearing that name being screamed out attached to the faintest hint of green hair and eyes that takes all of inko's coloring with their father's figure, down to the short frame and freckles, makes something pull at his insides.(click-append: "that name being screamed out")[ - ^^*Midoriya*, who married his sister, made her *cry*, Midoriya, Mirdoriya, *Midoriya*^^ -]
it had been *so long*, he had missed *so much*. mirai is at a cross roads, does he [[reach out?]] or does he ignore the green eyes and [[stay away|canon compliant]]?

otherwise he calls inko, for the first time in years.
[[make the call dumbass]].for a moment he hesitates, considering, but decides not to. so much time has passed, mirai had missed his chance to be in izuku's life time and time again, from glaring the whole way through inko's wedding, to ignoring the announcement of his birth in favor of following all might through a raid.
he resolves to keep an eye and ear out, and he *hears things*, but nothing so impressive as to give him an excuse to reach out.
but then the choice is taken away from him with [[mirio's request]].mirio comes to sir about
so he tests midoriya in canon.
he has the option to ( hook: tell midoriya about their relations | but no he can't do it) and instead [[remains silent|8 precepts]].this goes as canon.
[[rush to the hospital]]doctors: say a thing
midoriya: hey my mom and i donate this blood to the hospital, but i'm here, take mine
aizawa: no
midoriya: i'm pretty sure boss trumps teacher and letting him die is not an option
aizawa: n-
doctor: he's not wrong
aizawa: fuck, fine, but you're explaining it to all might
[[blood is thicker]]inko comes in freaking out - izuku thinks it's for him (how did you know????) but she says a dr called her because she's her younger brother's medical contact. izuku didn't know he had an uncle.
all might comes in.
they talk.
[[midoriya finds out]]hey so you're my uncle.
[[maybe it's time to end rifts|e1]][ - make the call dumbass line has not been written yet - ]the begining of a family coming together.

mirai sees things, but understands that there are times that it's better to not say a word about what he sees.(click-append:"word")[==>
(don't say anything about what his father with the pretty young OL and his manager do behind closed doors, don't say that he sees the same host time and time again with his mother until one day, sometime in the near future, she goes to the club only to find he's been stabbed by some fan of his)
<==]
in one universe, the akatani siblings are split apart, the distance between them growing and growing until they no longer feel they deserve to be in each other's lives.
this time, it's [[their own choice|choosing to leave]].inko, for all her cheer and goodwill, has no greater aspirations, is fine with her small town life, with her small town friends; of living and loving and dying just doors down from where she's grown up.
mirai is different.(click-append:"mirai is different")[; of course he is, bright eyed, able to see the future at his fingertips, no, he could never be okay with that quiet life his precious sister holds so dear]
in this world, he decides to make the most of Foresight, and applies to U.A., reaching for a path to help people as a hero.
[[and fails]].mirai fails the entrance exam.
it doesn't come as a surprise.(click-append:"it doesn't come as a surprise")[. except it does - he saw it, from inko's point of view, saw her crying and hugging mirai as he holds a paper with U.A.'s logo in his grip, but not knowing what she said meant he didn't know she was apologizing so profusely, not congratulating him.
it's hard to tell, since inko's cries at everything]
instead, he's placed in general education, where he soars and succeeds and embodies the whole *Plus Ultra* mindset, all with aims to give a good enough showing in the sports festival to move up into heroics.
and while he doesn't really impress any of the people watching at home or in the stands and has to bow out before the tournament rounds on a technicality he manages to gets someone's attention.(click-append:"any of the people watching at home")[ - except nee-chan and mitsuki-san who still treated him like the five year old runt he used to be -] (click-replace:"technicality")[*technicality* - the teams were uneven and while his team scraped by only because of his plans, his comrades still suggested he stop here, because he lacked a *suitable quirk* of all things -]
[[the teacher named nedzu]].everyone knew *of* nedzu, the first animal with a quirk to become a hero, let alone a pro. while he did a lot of his work behind the scenes, he still was somehow able to juggle teaching heroics at U.A. as well as a thriving hero agency.(click-append:"first animal with a quirk")[, rather than a human with an animal quirk,]
mirai never imagined the hero would become interested in him. and if it meant long hours every day after class to condition both body and quirk, if it meant leaving inko alone more and more in that tiny apartment they called home, well, mirai was willing to sacrifice what he had to for his shot at becoming a hero.
[[i am going to be your intern]]mirai pushes to be all might's intern and, eventually, sidekick.
it goes well and he rarely takes time off, in fact, toshinori has to push him to do so.
except for two times. a [[wedding]] and a [[funeral]].==>
it's a beautiful wedding. inko is glowing in a pretty number that mitsuki's fiance had designed, gloved hands linked with her newly named husband.
mirai has never liked hisashi midoriya.
not since the first time he Saw him in inko's future. not even when he met the man face to face, either.
because he sees that this man is going to crush his preicous nee-san, going to make her cry tears of pain and hurt her in awful ways.
but seeing how happy inko is right now is enough. because he's only Seen her this jubliant, this at ease a couple of times, and mirai is going to have to make it enough.(click-append:"right now")[ - and he's asked, plenty of times, if fleeting moments like this can make up for the future pain he Sees -]
<==
[[the other time mirai requests time off is for a funeral|funeral]].in another world, mirai ignores his father's passing, his mother works herself to death with only the most prefunctary of responses from him.
but this time, in this world, his family is a little less broken, a little more whole[.]<h1| so he stands next to his older sister, who normally cries at the drop of the hat, for both anguish and joy. there are no tears left, although her eyes are both red and glossyvin sadness. one hand is pressed tightly against his side and the other, mirai can see, is held protectivelly against a small swell against her stomach, the sweet hint of a [baby bump.]<h2|
well, eventually time passes. he gets to [[meet his nephew]].

inko had been *so excited*, so entranced with the idea of being a mother of her own, of playdates, and baby clothes, and hopefully taking her tiny bundle of joy to see the grandparents and that's never going to happen now, because mirai was too slow.(click-append:"too slow.")[ if he and all might could have been a little faster, if he had just *looked* and not been so tied up with helping take statements, maybe the duo would have been there, at the right place at the right time, to stop the villain from turning his parent's apartment building into debris.]

[[and then he turns three]].inko looks exasperated but clicks the play button on the video. "remember, your uncle will be coming soon so you can't spend *all* afternoon watching," she chides, even though she knows that her izuku probably can't hear her over his bouncing and shouts of delight. with a shake of her head, she moves out of the office, heading back towards the kitchen. mirai had said he'd be by
____
since it's his work mandated day off, mirai doesn't feel bad about ( hook : touching izuku : it's a reel, filled with ___.), only to frown minutely. izuku is still too young to really understand what kind of quirk foresight is, but inko has grown up watching mirai struggle with it, with what he sees and what he feels he cannot change and that frown? it makes something cold and dreadful settle in her stomach.
"if you work hard," mirai says eventually, ruffling the young child's hair, "you can save many people."
inko notices how he doesn't say that izuku can be a hero too.
[[it makes sense why he didn't say that after going to the doctor's a year later.]] izuku is devestated, inko is devestated, and hisashi, mirai knew, would be utterly useless. instead, he swallows his pride and asks a favor of toshinori.
"would you mind signing this?"
toshinori has chided his intern, time and time again, for using the money he makes working with him for buying ( hook all might merchandise :
"you can just take proof copies of it?? or the ones i get from the company??"
"it's not the same, it's not supporting your brand!")"Don't go near that loud blonde today, okay?"
Inko gives Mirai a quizical look - [[there's no blondes in her class|inko's troubles]] - but makes her brother a pinky promise before ushering off.
These coincidences continue though, too accurate to be anything other than a quirk.
[[But being able to peek into the future... isn't always good|quirks can do damage]].
It takes months, months of proving his worth, of training himself to be worthy of working with All Might.
And when Mirai gets his heroics license and shows up at All Might Agency, well, he's got a job with the best person he's ever met.(click-append:"heroics license")[ - and yes, his mother disowns him for it, but it's not like she cared for him anyways -]
